The French Revolution

The French Revolution

The French Revolution (1789-1799) can be summed up by the following equation: corruption + oppression + depression = revolution. The French Revolution was a disaster because, unlike the American Revolution a few years earlier which ended in religious liberty, it ended in the abolition of religion.  By the time the Reign of Terror was complete, 50,000 people had lost their heads on the guillotine, the seven day God-ordained week had been replaced by a 10 day week, and the years were dated from the beginning of the Revolution instead of from the birth of Christ.  Not surprisingly, the revolution was short lived when the revolutionary government ended up being more oppressive than the one it replaced.
