The Congress of Vienna – The Precursor to the United Nations

After the French Revolution and the ensuing Napoleonic Wars wherein France attempted to take control of Europe, ambassadors from the major powers of Europe convened at Vienna, Austria in 1814-1815 in an effort to put Europe back together. The countries that sacrificed much fighting the French were given restitution in the form of lands and possessions abroad. It was decided that the countries of Europe would be managed in a top-down approach with respect to geography and population in an attempt to maintain a balance of power which would promote peace. Although not a Libertarian model, failing to take into consideration self-determination, it was actually rather successful in preventing a continent-wide war for another 100 years until World War I.
