Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) came to power in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and restored the French government to a monarchy after the disastrous French Revolution. Napoleon was a successful military commander which enabled him to rise to power, eventually crowning himself emperor of France. Like all empires, France overextended itself and Napoleon suffered a major defeat by the Russians when he invaded Russia at the battle of Borodino. While he actually won the battle, he ended up losing over 90% of his army due to the harsh winter while marching back to France from Moscow. After returning to France Napoleon was able to raise another army and was defeated and then exiled to the island of Elba in the Mediterranean. After escaping from Elba he returned to France and managed to raise another army to finally be defeated at the battle of Waterloo by the British. He was then exiled to the island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic where he spent the rest of his life writing his memoirs explaining to the world why he was the greatest man who ever lived.
