The Most Influential Book in English Literature

King James Bible

Ever wondered where phrases such as “the powers that be,” the “skin of my teeth,” and “eat, drink, and be merry” originated?  These and dozens of other sayings in contemporary English date back to a book which many scholars regard as the most influential book in English literature: the King James Bible, or the Authorized Version of 1611.  King James I, king of England, commissioned over 50 of the best Greek and Hebrew scholars of that day to make a new translation of Bible which was completed in 1611.  Beginning in the early 1600s, the KJV permeated both British and American culture for over 400 years, impacting the English language more than any other book, though many Americans today don’t realize it because of their unfamiliarity with it.
