The Enlightenment – Thomas Hobbes

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) was an English political philosopher of the Enlightenment period. Hobbes pioneered the idea of the “state of nature” which he speculated was an ancient time when there was no government and chaos reigned due to depraved human nature.  Hobbes surmised that, in an effort to create order, men banded together in a social contract to create government as a means to institute law and provide social stability.  This is an interesting idea, but Hobbes never provided any evidence that such a “state of nature” ever actually existed on earth.

If the name Hobbes sounds familiar, it is likely because of your familiarity with the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes which got its name from the protestant reformer John Calvin and philosopher Thomas Hobbes.
