David Hume (1711-1776) was a philosopher during the so-called Enlightenment of the 17th-18th centuries. One of his infamous contributions to Enlightenment philosophy was his denial of cause and effect. Hume postulated that cause and effect cannot be proven, but is only assumed based on observing series of events repeatedly. Why would an intelligent man like Hume deny the obvious you might ask? Ever heard of the First Cause argument for the existence of God? Think about it.
