Classical Liberalism

Liberalism of the 18th and 19th centuries would not have had Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as adherents.  Liberals of those times would be called Libertarians today. It is for this reason that when modern historians refer to 19th century Liberalism, they often designate it as Classical Liberalism so as to not have it be misunderstood as the welfare-state, nanny-state Liberalism of the 20th and 21st centuries. Liberals of old advocated individual liberty and laissez faire (free market capitalism) economics.  Like Libertarians today, the Classical Liberals wanted as small and as non-intrusive of a government as possible. Liberals today should give back the name which they hijacked and call themselves what they truly are: socialists.
